The Recovery Clinic Therapeutic Nutrition Counseling Services
The Recovery Clinic offers clinical nutrition counseling services to adolescents, adults and families.are comprehensive and individualized. Our experienced registered dietitian nutritionists are well-grounded in both medical nutrition therapy (nutrition changes for preventing and treating various illnesses) and eating therapy for those with eating or weight struggles, including clinical eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and ARFID) for those with and without substance abuse issues. (or, for those with co-occurring substance abuse and/or other mental health conditions)
How we start:
A thorough initial evaluation covering current and past food intake and eating behavior, growth and weight history, medical conditions, lab values as needed, developmental history of eating and addiction struggles and their interrelationship, and environmental issues including shopping/food preparation/cooking skills, food budgeting, and social eating.
If you are a parent/caregiver with concerns about your child’s eating, we have a special pediatric intake process which we will discuss at first contact.
We then proceed with:
Establishing a successive foundation of skills to be able to improve eating and support recovery from substance abuse as needed, starting with food security (having enough food to eat) and moving all the way to making specific food selection changes to improve health, as needed and desired. We work collaboratively with the client to help eating become more consistent, well-rounded, balanced, cost-conscious and pleasurable.
Educating and goal setting with clients about nutrition issues specific to recovery as needed: sugar cravings in early recovery, brain healing through nutrition after addiction, blood sugar stabilization for improved mood stability, role of vitamin/mineral and other supplements, weight regulation following weight swings with addiction, eating well on a budget, whether in sober living homes or in the community, including resources for food and meal sites, cooking and meal education.
